Cancun's Hotel Zone and the city Downtown areas frequented by tourists and locals alike are amongst the safest places to travel in Mexico and are known throughout Mexico for their relatively lower crime rate. Other than the normal petty thievery frequent in all tourist destinations, major crime involving tourists in the tourist zones is almost non existent. Far more frequent is crime in the City of Cancun, on the mainland, north of Isla Cancun's famous Hotel District, and adjacent to the City areas in the restaurant and shopping areas in the Downtown area.
How safe is Cancun for tourists?
Over the last few years, Cancun has gathered notoriety because of a spate of crime that has pitted gangs against each other or drug dealers against other drug dealers.
As a result, visitors have become apprehensive about visiting the area.
However, the good news is that the situation has inspired an increased police presence in the region. At the moment, the Mexican police are seen patrolling key areas of the tourist destination in a bid to assure locals and citizens of safety.
Marines have also been enlisted to keep Cancun safe.If you are a tourist thinking of coming into the area, then safety is, to a great extent, guaranteed.
As indicated earlier, the main acts of violence have been perpetuated as a resort of gangs or drug related issues.
Tourists are rarely the subject of violent attacks, but you should always stay in the well-lit areas of the city and use rental cars as they are less prone to pick pocketing than public transport. In general, the tourist areas of Cancun and by extension the Mexican Caribbean locations of Isla Mujeres, Riviera Maya, Playa Del Carmen, Isla Cozumel, Tulum et al are considered by many to be some of the safest travel destinations in the Caribbean.
